On Tuesday, November 28, Housing Up will celebrate GivingTuesday, a day dedicated to global giving. GivingTuesday harnesses the power of social media and the spirit of giving in a time of need. At Housing Up, we know firsthand the uncertainty the families we serve are facing. 2023 was a difficult year in DC; we saw homelessness rise nearly 12 percent, and we now know that 1 in 10 DC residents (82,000 people) face housing insecurity. To ensure the families in our programs stay stably housed, we need your help now more than ever. We have been inspired by your kindness this year so far.

This GivingTuesday, we’re raising funds to support our families who are traveling the difficult road of maintaining their safe and affordable housing. Well over 90 percent of the low-income families we serve are Black families, many of whom have dealt with job loss or difficulty finding employment over the years, and who are disproportionately impacted by the high cost of living in the District.

As always, your generosity makes a big impact on our families. One of the many people you’ve helped is Mr. Cornelius Diggs. After getting laid off from his job due to a back injury, Mr. Diggs found himself homeless and lived in a shelter for a year. Under our Veterans Connections program, he was referred to Housing Up looking for housing support. Through the help of his case manager and our housing services team, Mr. Diggs received access to an apartment, allowing him to get back on his feet and do the things he loves, like art. Though the road to success has not been easy for Mr. Diggs, safe, stable and affordable housing has provided him a solid foundation to continue living his life.
