Dearest Brown
Permanent Supportive Housing Case Manager
Can you tell us a bit about yourself?
I am passionate about my work at Housing Up where I have the opportunity to advocate for individuals and help improve their lives. This role allows me to channel my enthusiasm for social justice into meaningful action, and I find it incredibly fulfilling.
In my spare time, I dedicate myself to educating myself on local social justice issues, particularly focusing on affordable housing and healthcare. I believe that understanding these topics is essential to addressing the inequalities that many individuals and families face. I actively seek out resources and information that can help promote well-being and drive systemic change in our communities.
I am always eager to learn more and connect with others who share a commitment to these causes. I believe that through collaboration and advocacy, we can make a significant impact in addressing social injustices. Whether through community engagement or working in my current role as a PSH Case Manager, I strive to contribute to a more equitable society for everyone.
What’s one accomplishment at Housing Up you are most proud of?
Thank you for allowing me to share my thoughts on such a proud moment. I would say that one of my most rewarding experiences at Housing Up was witnessing the incredible support I received from my teammates, Deborah and Antionette, while navigating the challenges of getting my client leased under her new voucher. After being backlogged on DCHA’s waiting list for such a long time, it felt like a monumental task, but we persevered together.
Hearing my client express her faith in my efforts as her case manager during this waiting period was truly heartwarming. It reminded me of the importance of our work and the real impact we can have on the lives of those we serve. The joy I felt when she was finally housed in February 2025 is difficult to put into words. It reinforced my belief in the power of collaboration and support within our team.
What do you wish more people knew about affordable housing and homelessness?
From my point of view, it’s essential for more people to understand the complexities surrounding affordable housing and homelessness. Many individuals often see homelessness as a personal failure, but in reality, it’s a multifaceted issue influenced by various systemic factors. Economic downturns, rising housing costs, and insufficient mental health support play significant roles in pushing people into precarious living situations.
I believe that affordable housing is a fundamental right, not just a privilege. It provides stability, safety, and the opportunity for individuals and families to thrive. When people have access to affordable housing, they can focus on rebuilding their lives, pursuing education, and finding stable employment. It’s also about fostering a sense of community and belonging.
Furthermore, the stigma surrounding homelessness often prevents meaningful conversations and solutions. It’s important that we approach this issue with empathy and understanding, recognizing that anyone can find themselves in a difficult situation. By raising awareness, we can help create a society where everyone has a safe and affordable place to call home.
What’s something not everyone knows about you?
One thing many people might not know is that I balance a playful sense of silliness with a deep compassion for others. I believe that humor can be a powerful tool in building connections and easing tensions, while empathy allows me to understand and support those around me.
I pride myself on being approachable and genuinely enjoy interacting with people from all walks of life. Whether it’s in a professional setting or casual conversations, I strive to create an environment where everyone feels comfortable expressing themselves. I find that these interactions not only enrich my own experiences but also foster collaboration and teamwork. I truly am the funniest person I know!!!
