Trusted Solutions Group (TSG) a DC-area construction company approached Steve Martin, THC’s Job Developer, a little under two weeks ago with an exciting opportunity – they were in need of additional employees! The Employment Services teams quickly sprang into action, calling THC clients that they knew were interested in construction work and good candidates for the openings available. Six clients worked with their employment counselors to prepare for the event – modifying resumes to fit this new opportunity, and learning different ways to answer questions to increase their interviewing success. The entire team came together to support THC clients in their success, including THC’s new Employment Counselor Nelson Santiago in his third day on the job!

By the time the job fair rolled around on March 28^th, the clients were nervous and excited. A constant challenge faced by many THC families is that of having a criminal record. While finding a job is already difficult in DC, a city flush with talented individuals and a booming economy, it is even more challenging if you have anything on your record. This thought was on the minds of a few clients that day. This worry was quickly eased as the TSG recruiter announced that this isn’t a reason they wouldn’t be hired. It wouldn’t stop them from moving forward and growing in the TSG work environment. A sense of ease took over the space, and clients began to feel more comfortable in the interview process.

In total, six clients interviewed. An hour after the interview, Steve received a call from the recruiter – two people were hired! Mr. R and Mr. J are now working in construction clean up at a building in Southeast, DC. After a building is built, a group of people come and clean the space prior to the folks that take care of the finishing touches (like painting, carpet installation, etc…). These clients will receive on the job training and will have opportunities to pursue future professional development with TSG in their construction careers.
