Living in the City is on 10/8!

We are excited to announce that our most important fundraiser of the year, Living in the City, is happening on October 8 at 6 pm. Living in the City supports the more than 900 families we serve, and is a great way to get connected with Housing Up’s mission to end family homelessness in DC. Proceeds from the event directly support our families; not a cent is spent on event expenses or overhead. While we have seen a lot of uncertainty around our federal and local government funding this year, there is one thing we are sure of: our community’s commitment to helping families thrive, especially during challenging times. Reserve your ticket or sponsor the event today!
What: Living in the City 2025
When: Wednesday, October 8. Doors open at 6pm, program begins at 7pm.
Where: Canvas Event Space (1418 W Street NW, Washington, DC 20009). Entrance to Canvas is in the alley between W St. and V St. See map.

On the Blog: Climate Change & Housing
As temperatures soar in DC, we are reminded of how the consequences of extreme weather are experienced unequally. This month on the blog, we investigated how climate change, homelessness, and social inequality are all deeply intertwined. Research reveals that climate change disproportionately affects communities of color, low-income households, and marginalized communities. In the US, racially discriminatory housing policies and environmental racism have caused Black Americans to face the greatest impacts of climate change. For Black individuals experiencing homelessness, the effects of severe weather are further compounded. Ultimately, we must work together as a community to prioritize the health and safety, including housing, of those most vulnerable to climate change. To learn more about the relationship between climate change and homelessness, read our latest blog post, “Unsheltered in a Changing Climate: Climate Change & Homelessness”.
Support Our Back to School Drive!

Our Back to School Drive is fully underway, and we are so thankful to the incredible groups and individuals who have already donated supplies and backpacks! Across our permanent supportive housing and rapid re-housing programs, each school-age child who needs a backpack receives a backpack full of grade-appropriate school supplies. Having access to school essentials such as backpacks, pencils, notebooks, and calculators ensures our students start the school year on track with the resources they need to thrive. This initiative is made possible entirely by generous contributions from our community members. Please click here to make a monetary donation or donate supplies via our Walmart wish list! If your business or workplace would like to make a donation, please contact Shahidah Abdul-Lateef at sabdul-lateef@housingup.org.
