Associate Board Spotlight: Dominique Desroches
Meet Dominique from Our Associate Board
Can you tell us a bit about yourself?I am originally from South Florida, but moved to DC last April after living in NYC for a few years. Professionally, I work in healthcare consulting, where I advise insurance organizations that operate Medicare and Medicaid plans – helping them navigate policy, strategy, and operational challenges to support the evolving needs of the members they serve. I’m a new face on the Associate Board – I joined in October.
What inspired you to join Housing Up’s Associate Board?
I was inspired to join Housing Up’s Associate Board because I deeply believe that stable, dignified housing is the foundation for opportunity. Throughout my academic and professional careers, I have seen how profoundly social factors – especially housing — shape a person’s well-being and long-term outcomes. Housing Up’s mission resonated with me because it goes beyond providing a home. I love that Housing Up surrounds families with the supportive services and community resources needed to make their transition out of homelessness sustainable. The holistic approach mirrors the values I hold.
What’s your favorite Housing Up memory? What made it so special?
Last year, we organized a Black History Month-themed trivia night at Partner Arms 1 (PA 1) which was a huge success with residents. We tailored many of the questions to focus on DC-specific Black history and culture, and it was powerful to see the sense of pride and connection many of the residents felt. Another favorite moment was witnessing one of Housing Up’s long-term residents at PA 1 transition from permanent supportive housing into their own, new apartment in the DMV region.
What do you wish more people knew about affordable housing and homelessness?
I wish more people understood that homelessness isn’t a personal failing – it’s most often the outcome of systemic barriers, rising housing costs, and a lack of supportive resources. Affordable housing is not just about the buildings, but rather stability, dignity, and the chance for families to rebuild their lives with a real foundation underneath them.
What would you say to someone who is considering joining Housing Up’s Associate Board?
I’d tell anyone considering joining the Associate Board that it’s one of the most meaningful ways to make a real, local impact. You don’t have to be an expert in housing or social services to contribute — what matters most is a willingness to show up, learn, and lend your skills to a mission that truly changes lives. Serving on the Board gives you a front row seat to the difference stable housing and supportive services make for families across the DMV. It’s also a great way to build community, grow your leadership experience, and work alongside people who care deeply about strengthening our city. If you are looking for a way to give back in a hands-on, purpose-driven way, this is a fantastic place to start!
What’s your favorite thing to do in the DMV?
Tough question – there is so much to do! Though in keeping with the adoration of water that befits the Floridian I am, I adore going for strolls by the waterfront and watching the sunrise. It is so peaceful, and completely worth the 5:30am wake ups in the summertime!
