The Faircliff is Honored in the Mayor’s “Elite 8”

The Faircliff, located in Columbia Heights
Housing Up is proud to share that our newest housing development, The Faircliff, has been recognized as one of DC’s “Elite 8” transformational projects in the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development’s (DMPED) 12th annual March Madness initiative. In partnership with Somerset Development Company and Jonathan Rose Companies, this project expanded the number of affordable housing units from the previous building on site from 80 to 125, creating more safe and affordable housing opportunities for low-income families in DC.
We’re also thrilled that The Parks at Walter Reed, where we co-developed Abrams Senior Apartments and Abrams Assisted Living, and is home to own headquarters, earned a spot among this year’s honorees. These groundbreaking projects demonstrate how Housing Up and our partners are transforming the lives of the families we serve and the DC landscape by providing safe, affordable housing. Happy Women’s History Month!
As a women-led organization that serves mostly single Black and brown mothers, National Women’s History Month holds great significance for us. We recognize that not all women face the same barriers to stability, and that women of color experience the combined impact of racism and sexism. This month, we showcased how achieving gender equity is not just a “women’s issue”; it has profound positive impacts on society as a whole. In our blog post “When the Face of Poverty is Female,” we examined the “feminization of poverty” and why women are disproportionately more likely to live in poverty compared to men. Read the full blog post here and swipe through the carousel to learn more. On our social channels, we celebrated the women who are driving change in DC today. Make sure to check out the amazing work these women are doing on our Instagram.

Hearts of Empowerment volunteers at Webster Gardens, 2022
National Volunteer Month is just around the corner in April, and it’s the perfect time to begin your volunteer journey with Housing Up. Volunteers, what we call our Front Porch Crew, bring care, connection, and hope that are invaluable to the families we serve. Whether you’re creating moments of joy, building trust, boosting a child’s confidence, or just showing up consistently, your support lets the families we serve know they are seen and valued. Over the past few years, our community partner, Hearts of Empowerment, has hosted tailored events, such as gardening days and holiday parties, for families in our Webster Gardens community. Click here to watch a video about how their volunteers have fostered community and helped families move forward with stability and a sense of belonging.
In 2026, we’ve added new volunteer opportunities to better reflect the evolving needs and interests of the families we serve. You can get involved through ongoing initiatives like our youth tutoring program, or volunteer for one-time events like our upcoming Mother’s Day Self-Care Celebration. Explore all of our current volunteer opportunities here, and contact Communications & Engagement Assistant Julia Bliss at jbliss@housingup.org with any questions.
