Last night, Transitional Housing Corporation was honored at the First Annual Maryland Innovation & Entrepreneurship in Real Estate Awards for our Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Commons housing project. The Colvin Institute of Real Estate Development at the University of Maryland School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation, in conjunction with the Clark School of Engineering and the Smith School of Business, presented the award. The Maryland Innovation and Entrepreneurship Awards are designed to commemorate the most imaginative successes of the year.
The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Commons will transform three blighted buildings in Southeast DC into the first multi-family Passive House project of its kind in Washington, DC. By using these energy efficient retrofitting techniques, we will reduce the carbon footprint and the utility costs for tenants.
When completed in mid-2015, the apartments will provide 36 low and moderate income families, including 12 homeless or formerly homeless families exiting the DC shelter system, with below-market rents, employment services and other support for residents.
“We know that utilities are some of the largest expenses that a family has after rent and transportation. By combining energy efficient techniques with affordable housing, we are creating an environment where families can focus on raising their children and living their lives, rather than worrying about their cost of living,” explained THC Director of Affordable Housing, Blaise Rastello. “We are honored to receive the Maryland Innovation & Entrepreneurship in Real Estate Award for our efforts to make DC a city where there is housing for all!”
