As you might have noticed, our newsletter has brand new name and look to match our new organizational name, Housing Up. Like our new name, we think Upward captures the positive transformation families undergo in our programs.

We’ll still be sending you monthly updates on our work, our families and our staff with the Upward newsletter. We look forward to sharing our stories with you.

Living in the City 2016

Thanks to all of our sponsors, volunteers and attendees who made this year’s Living in the City, presented by Somerset Development, such a success.

Our service auction raised much needed funds for important Housing Up services.Our backpack and school supplies drive helps the kids in our programs have healthy, stress-free starts to the school year. Furnishings for rapid re-housing families help turn housing into homes for families who often have nothing when they leave the shelter system. Support for our youth tutoring programs gives kids the one-on-one after-school support they need to succeed, and finally, our case management services help families confront and successfully navigate day-to-day challenges and reach long-term goals. Thanks to your auction contributions, these key programs will continue making a difference in the lives of the families we serve.

If you were at Living in the City, you witnessed a story of transformation and saw the value of our work. Marsha Wood bravely shared the journey of her and her children from homelessness to hope. Please take a moment to view her story. We need to offer this vision of hope to all families experiencing homelessness in the District – and we will.

Affordable Housing Update

Our Affordable Housing team, under the leadership of our new VP of Affordable Housing, Julia Moran Morton, has been hard at work on projects to create or rehabilitate affordable housing units across the District. Here’s a snapshot of what they’ve been up to.

Partner Arms 2

The Partner Arms 2 rehabilitation project is currently in the design phase, with the goals of bringing the building to a more modern standard while also addressing structural issues. The Affordable Housing team has also begun the process of securing funding sources to finance the project. We expect to begin construction in early 2017.

Hedin House

Housing Up and Security Properties are partnering on the rehabilitation and recapitalization of this expiring Section 8 housing property.The development team is preparing documentation to secure construction permits and we intend to begin construction in the fall of 2016.
