Every day, moms in our Housing Up community are doing the hard work of building better futures for themselves and their families. They work, support their children in school, manage tight budgets, and navigate systems that were never designed with them in mind. We see their resilience, and we know that with the right support, resilience can become lasting stability.
This May, we’re lifting up the voices and experiences of the mothers at the heart of our work and inviting you to support them with your dollars. 80 percent of the almost 600 families we serve are led by Black and brown single mothers. These women are providers, caregivers, and advocates for their children, often all at once. Yet they face steep, systemic barriers to stable housing, particularly Black mothers, who are disproportionately impacted by housing instability due to longstanding inequities.
Housing instability isn’t just about rent – it affects every part of a family’s life. It can mean missed school days, job disruptions, food insecurity, and chronic stress. But when families have access to safe, stable housing and the right resources, things change. Families don’t just stabilize but thrive.
Meet Ms. Holmes:
Ms. Holmes is one of the many mothers who came to Housing Up during a time of uncertainty and found a pathway forward. After experiencing homelessness, she connected with Housing Up and began rebuilding for herself and her family. With access to stable housing and supportive services, Ms. Holmes was able to regain her footing, focus on her goals (including focusing on her mental health), and create a more secure future for her children. Today, she speaks not just about the challenges she faced, but about the strength it took to move forward, and how Housing Up’s consistent, on-site support helped her along the way. This May, you can support Housing Up moms through our Family Stability Fund, which provides flexible financial assistance to families when they need it most. It covers essentials like rent, utilities, and food. Many of the families we serve are facing critical moments that will determine whether they stay housed or fall into crisis.
