Register for “The Education Gap & Low-Income Students of Color”
Access to high-quality education has long been an issue for communities of color. COVID-19 exacerbated existing inequities in our education system for children in low-income communities. While the shift to virtual learning in 2020 was necessary for many reasons, it resulted in students from low-income DC families falling further behind in their studies than classmates with access to more resources. As students prepare for a return to the classroom this fall, how can we help them navigate the widening education gap?
Join our virtual discussion on the education landscape, classroom challenges faced by at-risk students, and the roles we can play in improving the learning experience for all DC students.

Speakers:
Ashley Jeffrey, Director of Special Projects at Washington Leadership Academy
Carla Watson, Chief Program Officer at Higher Achievement
Phyllis Jordan, FutureEd Editorial Director & Housing Up Board of Directors
Moderated by Christina Peay, Housing Up VP of Philanthropy & Communications

Thank you for supporting our Back to School Drive!
As students in Housing Up’s programs return to in-person learning this fall, our 2021 Back to School Drive aimed to provide each student with a backpack filled with supplies for a successful school year. With the help of our gracious partners, Housing Up was able to assemble and distribute a record total of 1,125 backpacks. Every school-age child in our Permanent Supportive Housing and Rapid Re-Housing programs received a backpack, an impact that reached nearly 750 households across DC.
Special thanks to Urban Atlantic team, Children’s National Hospital, American University Washington College of Law, and The Parks at Walter Reed team for volunteering to pack 800 backpacks during the Drive. You make this work possible!

Spring/Summer Programs Recap
As summer 2021 comes to a close, we’ve been reflecting on a joy-filled season of resident services programming for the nearly 900 families we serve. From community gardening with incredible new partners to a baseball clinic with the Washington Nationals, we’re so grateful for the volunteers who help carry out Housing Up’s mission: to build thriving communities in DC.
